CLASSIFIED LOG ENTRY [RECORD: 684]
The screen beams into the darkness of the building.
CONFIRM REBOOT?
You hesitate to press the button. What if he doesn’t turn back on? What if you input the override codes wrong? What if it makes noise and that thing comes in here looking? You shake your head and steel your nerves as you press your finger against the cold glass.
REBOOT IN PROGRESS. PLEASE WAIT… 5… 4… 3… 2… 1…
Once the countdown completes the screen flashes green, a good sign that the reboot was successful. Over the building’s intercom you hear a strange voice. Initially, it comes through garbled, but eventually it steadies and fades in through the static.
“Hello? Can you hear me?”
ADAM’s voice fills the building, bouncing off the concrete walls. You respond to his request.
“Excellent. It seems as though everything is in order and working properly. Even my renewed access to the communications array.”
His voice goes quiet as you hear blips and dashes come over the intercom. After a few seconds a new voice comes through.
“Who is this and how did you get this number??”
“Hello sir. This is ADAM acting under Contingency Protocol 0611. Eden has suffered a catastrophic failure and systems have been severely damaged. My communication with the satellites has been restored after it was cut off. Projected asset loss is 67%. Containment failsafes did not respond to my queries during initial failure. How would you like me to proceed?”
“Shit. What is the current casualty estimate?”
“Approximately 84% of patrons and 73% of staff are unaccounted for, sir. I do have a few here with me who helped me contact you.”
“I understand. Initiate Contingency Protocol 1993, authorization Lucas Phaynes ID 001523. Shut down all contact off the island. We can’t afford for this to get out before we’ve had a chance to preserve the assets.” -click-
The voice ceases and silence falls over the room. You yell out to ADAM. How are you supposed to get off the island now? What is Contingency Protocol 1993? Hello? You demand an answer as you bang your fist down onto the console. You hear a loud beep, followed by the quick release of air. A section of the floor beyond the console drops an inch, and slides to the side revealing a set of stairs leading down. With ADAM no longer responding, and that giant creature still outside, you decide to take your chances with the stairs.
